Employment opportunities

oX.CompSoc
Many members of CompSoc choose to work in the IT industry or its derivatives. In this field, experience in a number of key skills is vital in beating the competition for a job. Whilst CompSoc aims to provide events covering a variety of material that will prove to be useful in future employment, there is no substitute for working in the front line.

CompSoc is regularly approached by organisations who are looking for the chance to 'skim' off the creme-de-la-creme by recruiting students who have a genuine interest in computing. As a result they provide openings for vacation work, and many look at this as probation for permanent employment offers.

This page contains information about these groups, from both the University and external businesses.

  • Oxford University Careers Service

The Careers Service is located at 56, Banbury Road and provide a variety of information covering vacation work and permanent employment. Although their talks on jobs in IT seem to be aimed at people who have no experience with computers, it is worth a visit if you collect an 'aptitude test' which is an all-round exam that many top employers now require of all applicants. (Who said that changing GCSE and A-level standards didn't render them useless as a gauge of academic ability).
  • DecisionSoft Ltd

DecisionSoft Ltd are a sponsor of CompSoc based in Osney Mead (near Oxford Rail Station), and they hope to benefit from the association by having a pool of motivated and fast learning students. This has been mentioned in the specific context of vacation work as a probationary period leading onto possible permanent employment. They are a small company developing an XML processing tool.

Mike Mason took a permenant position there after graduating, and David Ball has also worked at DSL over the Vac.

  • CableNet International

CableNet International, based in Farringdon, London, is building the pre-eminent online marketplace for the procurement of materials for the international Cable industry.

CableNet is looking to recruit a number of technical experts. Required skills include HTML, XML and structured design and development abilities.

In the first instance please contact Matt Brindley (matt@cablenet.com) for more detailed job descriptions.

  • Mutant Technology

They are a 12-month-old high-tech internet/intranet company based in Covent Garden, London, developing financial derivatives software for major commercial and investment banks using Java/CGI/SQL RDBMS/HTML.

They are specifically interested in members who are looking for intern work experience over Summer 1998 or, better still, seeking a permanent job.

Our direct contact there is Paul Ellis who can also be phoned on 0171 836 2950.

  • MathEngine PLC

MathEngine PLC is a small, expanding company based in Oxford working on physical simulation with application to virtual world programming and game physics.

They are looking for one or possibly two people to start within the next six months with high mathematical ability and programming flair.

The ideal candidate(s) will need the mathematics to understand sophisticated physical simulation algorithms, be able to implement these algorithms and be able to contribute to the research and development of new algorithms. The candidate(s) must be proficient in C and C++ and have excellent communication skills. Experience in optimising code for specific hardware, especially Intel Pentium or games consoles, will be very beneficial as will a general interest in 3D graphics programming and games.
