Registration and Authorisation Procedure

  1. All members of the Oxford University Computer Society will be offered the privilege of enjoying the use of an account on the CompSoc computer network.
  2. All such members will complete the necessary application and authorization forms, and agree to abide by the current and future rules of the Society, which include an agreement to abide by the rules of the IT Security and Privacy Policy of the University of Oxford.
  3. Members may use the machines for any legal purpose, providing those acts, or direct or indirect consequences of those acts, do not bring the University or the Society in to disrepute, or adversely affect others usage of the system. This restriction forbids, but is not limited to, any commercial activity or commercial data storage on the system. Sending of unsolicited email is also prohibited.
  4. Members will, implied by using the system, agree to any quota system, or other restrictions, that are currently in place.
  5. Non-members of the Society will have the ability to access services that are advertised as being freely available, providing that usage is compliant with the same usage for members of the Society, for example httpd, fingerd.

Investigation Procedure

  1. In the event of a University investigation, or other investigation which must be officially handled outside of the Society, then the committee will immediately suspend any accounts under investigation and assist University officials in their enquiries. Any review of the status of these accounts will occur after the findings of the investigations have been reported.
  2. Any investigations which are appropriate to be handled by the Society committee will begin with those accounts under investigation being suspended. Investigation will then proceed as follows:

    Preliminary investigations, consisting of

    1. informing the Senior Member of the Society of the reasoning for the revocation or monitoring.
    2. the Systems Administrators collecting evidence and reporting to the committee their finding.
    3. The committee of the Society will decide if the action taken was reasonable, after consultation with the member whose authorization has been revoked.
    4. The member will have the right to appeal against the Society's actions.
    5. All investigations will take place, and be resolved, within a period of one University Term.

Appeals Mechanism

  1. After the verdict of the Committee has been reached the member will have the right to appeal to the Senior Member of the Society against the verdict.
  2. The member will have a period of two University Weeks in which to appeal.
  3. The Senior Member will hear the evidence, and will decide as he sees fit - if necessary, by calling an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Society.
  4. The decision of the EGM will be binding and final.
