Fishy replaces Daffy as gateway machine

Daffy has been faithfully handling our web and mail servers for a long time, but it has finally had to be brought out this role due to a suspected overheating problem. Fishy has now taken its place as the gateway machine, after being tested for Y2K compliance by the Sysadmin team.

New Machines donated by WDR

We recently received three new machines from WDR, the investment bank. Two are Sun UltraSparc Enterprise 1s, and the other is an HP server. The new machines are currently housed in Keble College, where they are being set up by our System Administration Co-ordinator, Jon Chin. The plans are to run Sparc Linux on one of the Suns, and Solaris on the other. The HP machine will run HP/UX.
As well as these machines, WDR have also donated a large number of SCSI disks and DLT Tapes, which we will be putting to good use.

Sticky Dies

January and February 2000 saw various hardware failures in Sticky, which resulted first in Spiffy taking its place as the main login box then later in the scrapping of its motherboard and an 8GB disk :(. All services are now back up, but unfortunately our fastest x86 based box is now the re-built sticky, a P100.
