Throff's Family

Throff

The Earth Goddess. So called because she created land. She is the daughter of Titan and the sister of Galana. Many scholars also believe her mother to be Glantanka and it is possible therefore that Assamarra and Hamaskis are her brothers.

It was Throff who originally found the magic earth from which the world was made. As such her father gave her the first choice as to what to create on Titan. Through her first marriage to Hydana, she bore the sons Aqualis, Farigiss and Atlan. However, after creating the oceans Hydana became so entranced by his realm that he retired there for great lengths of time. Having been deserted Throff was wooed by the attentions of the Fire God, Filash.

Through her second marriage to Filash she bore the sons Verlang and Lorodil. Thus Throff is the mother of five of the most powerful Gods in the Celestial Court. This consolidates her central position within the Celestial Court. She is also associated with Hashak, the Creator who was deemed one of her servants.

As well as creating the land on Titan she also made the Dwarfs who know her as Kerellim and worship her with a passion. She is also known as Alishanka and as Elluviel (to the Elves). In the north of the Old World (e.g. in Gallantaria where she is one of the primary focuses of prayer), she is called the Earth Mother. The Sisters of Time is the name given to the past, present and future manifestations of the Earth Mother. In this form she is associated ceremonially with the Horned God.

In the legend of Throben, Alishanka is one of the six Gods who created this mystical land to prevent the loss of the wisdom of magic after the First Battle, investing the She-Satyrs with her magic.

The priests of Throff will most often wear robes in her sacred colour Silver. Adventuring Priests of the Goddess are most commonly Dwarfs. She herself is portrayed as a Bejewelled Female and her symbol is the Diamond.

Atlan

The Messenger of the Gods. The term messenger in this instance is more akin to emissary, for Atlan represents the Gods on matters of great importance and is entrusted with the conveyance of the consensus of the Greater Gods to mortals and Gods alike. His powers of communication are unrivalled.

He is seen by some scholars to be a son of Hydana and Throff. This combination of parentage is thought to be symbolic of his ease of travel over both land and water. The patron of travellers, Fulkra, and the patron of mariners, Solinthar, are his sons. Atlan, in his capacity as Messenger of the Gods, is the creator of the Suma, the divine spiritual messengers of the Gods and answerers of prayers.

Jack-in-the-Green is an entity that, on rare occasions, has been seen by noble heroes and has acted as a messenger for Titan. The fact that this seems to overlap with Atlan's domain leads to the belief that Jack-in-the-Green is the name given to Atlan in some parts of the Old World. He is said to have referred to the fact that he also known as the Ancient King. Given that Atlantis was named after Atlan and at the heart of this lost island was the volcano Mount Atlan, it is possible that Atlan first held the mantle as guardian of the realm. The people of Atlantis regarded their king as a direct descendant of Atlan. It is therefore logical to presume that he was seen as the first king of Atlantis, the Ancient King. However, some scholars believe this name actually refers to Logaan, the Trickster God. In Gallantaria, where this Messenger is revered, there are barrows that are said to be the burial mounds of the Ancient Kings of that area. When Jack-in-the-Green has been seen it is not in the form of a man but rather as the image of a face seemingly formed by the wind in the grass or in the leaves of a bush or a tree.

Aqualis

The God of Rivers. Scholars believe that this elemental God is the son of Throff and Hydana. Aqualis is considered to be one of the Greater Gods due to the power of his elemental nature.

He was known in ancient Djarata as Cracca. In this land he was depicted with the head of a crocodile and seen as the Ferryman of the Gods.

Farigiss

The God of Ice and Cold. Scholars believe that this elemental God is the son of Throff and Hydana. He combines the element of his father with the nature of land. He is also the brother of Aqualis and of Atlan.

This powerful elemental God is considered to be one of the Greater Gods. He is worshipped to one degree or another by all races that dwell in the far north of Titan and wherever there is snow and ice. The people of Gallantaria worship this God widely.

Titan's Other Children

Assamara

The God of the Desert. Known in ancient Djarata as the God of the Sands or God of the Deserts and Arid Places. He is a powerful but often forgotten God. His ancient name is very similar to the name given to the Sun Goddess in South East Allansia. It is likely that the South Eastern Allansians took the name of this God and because of the very strong connections with the Sun, confused the two.

It should be remembered that the names and images ascribed to the Gods are made by the inhabitants of Titan. Our minds could not possibly comprehend the true forms of the Gods. As such it is the fact that a God is being worshipped that it is important to that deity, not the name being used during the worship. For this reason it is possible that the corruption of the name of Assamarra to Assamura and the subsequent replacement of the focus of that name being the Sun rather than the Desert would not force a divine intervention on the part of the Sun Goddess.

Scholars are of the opinion that Assamarra is the son of Titan and Glantanka. Despite his apparent withdrawal from the minds of worshippers he is still considered one of the Greater Gods, especially given the nature of his pedigree.

Assamarra is depicted in ancient statues as a regal-looking man, bare-chested, wearing a simple cloth round his waist. On his head is a tall cylindrical crown with nine bands round it. In one hand he is often seen holding a long staff.

Galana

Goddess of Plants and Fertility. Known to the Elves, who she created, as Erillia or Elf Mother. Also known as Kachasta, Zaran (in Lendleland), The Gardener, and the Lady of Corn (to orcs). She is the daughter of Titan and sister to Throff. Certain priesthoods believe her also to be the daughter of Glantanka with whom she has a very close relationship. It is possible that she is also the sister of Assamarra and Hamaskis.

She is one of the Greater Gods and as such has many minor deities under her protection. Among these deities are all the Gods of agriculture, such as Varantar and the Ploughman, as well as the Elven Gods referred to as the Children of Erillia. The latter is thought to be a symbolic title. However, there is a strong body of religious and scholarly thought that believe that they may actually be her children and that Hamaskis may be their father.

She has been termed The Veiled Sorceress. This is the name given to her during the First Battle. Being veiled refers to her veiling her face to hide her fear as the Battle commenced. All gods are capable of magic, but the reason why Galana was especially referred to as a Sorceress was due to her part in the Firebolt that she formed with Glantanka and Kilanirax, which then won the Battle but destroyed Time. There is a constellation in the southern Skies of Titan named after her in this guise. With the exception of a number of Animal Court members she is the only god depicted in the constellations for her part in the First Battle. The reason that we may see her in the stars is because she so veiled herself. If she had not been veiled then her beauty would have been too bright for the stars to emulate.

Galana's symbol is the Tree or more rarely a plant. She is depicted most often as a beautiful woman swathed in flowers. Her temples are very natural, simple affairs such as a wooden building but more commonly will be a Glade of Trees. The priests who tend to the flora of these temples will be dressed in Green robes, this being her sacred colour. You may well encounter such priests who are known to often be wandering priests determined to be amongst the flora of their Mistress's creation. She is widely worshipped in many lands (for instance Gallantaria).

The Children of Erillia

This is the name given to a group of minor elven deities under the protection of Galana, whom the elves know as Erillia, and there are also associations with Hamaskis in many cases. Although the title is thought to be purely symbolic, it is possible that they are the offspring of Hamaskis and Galana. There are many gods referred to by this title, including Aegraven, goddess of flowers; Argowen, god of trees; Istarel, god of Forest Creatures (who has close ties with many members of the Animal Court), Alliarien, god of magic; Euthillial, god of languages and Ititia, god of Reason. These last three have a close relationship with Hamaskis.

Iatro: This is the Elven name of the Goddess of healing and succour. This deity abhors the undead as abominations of nature and, of the Gods, is their bitterest enemy. In eastern Khul, especially on the Islands that lie to the east of the continent (including the Arrowhead Islands, Blood Island, and Stayng Island) she is worshipped also by humans and is referred to as The White Goddess. They call her a Goddess of healing, the Goddess of solace and succour, and the Goddess of love and life. However, the reference to love and life does not supplant the deities Asrel and Galana. Rather it is a symbolic reference to the art of healing.
