The Realm of Analand

The Shrine is indeed fortunate to be able to bring our visitors Jared Milne's Cyclopaedia of the Old World. This article covers the nation of Analand, whose history is perhaps the longest of all the organized nations of the Old World, having its roots in the Irritarian over-state of Arianaland.

A Dissertation upon Said Realm and the Peoples Thereunto

The kingdom of Analand has suffered much in previous centuries, including invasions by everyone from Brice to Mauristatia to Kakhabad to Lendleland. However, it is a testament to the nation's character that they have been able to recover from these debacles, and also that they have been able to cling hard to their belief in the powers of Good when others would have turned away. Analand is carefully watching both Kakhabad and the developing situation in Brice and Ruddlestone carefully. Analand does not want to be involved in another War of the Four Kingdoms, for it is not yet strong enough to survive such a thing. A Third Ruddlestone War would also negatively affect its volume of trade, and no one would benefit from it, least of all Analand. Analand is a very pleasant land to live in, much like Femphrey. However, its economic power is nowhere near as strong, even after the recovery afforded it by the Crown of Kings. Nonetheless, Queen Ahleesia fights to keep her kingdom strong, and allow it to grow once more.

Geography

The plain stretching from Lake Libra to the northern border is where the majority of the Analanders dwell. At the far end of this extremely fertile plain lies the capital city of Arkleton, home to the young Queen Ahleesia. It is based on the Goldflow River which connects to the Goldwater Lake, rich in metal ores. Flakes of gold can even be seen floating in the water! The gold from here kept Analand from falling apart entirely after the Great Wall of Analand debacle and provides Analand with a stable revenue source. Analand has many resources, but still has not been able to use them effectively, even three centuries after the building of the wall and the recent detrimental effects caused by the War of the Four Kingdoms. Many rich forests dot Analand, as well as the mines and hills in Far Analand, giving the nation rich potential that it has only begun to exploit after the various disasters in its history.

Climate and WeatherPhysical ResourcesCreatures and Vegitation

Analand is full of natural resources - spices and minerals from Far Analand, gold from Goldwater Lake, and the excellent farmland-but the various disasters over its history and incompetence of some of its rulers has prevented it from fully exploiting these resources. Just about every favorable type of terrain is present in Analand, with fallow fields, hills and forests in most of the north, turning to mountains in the south.

Inhabitants

Analand's population is seventy-nine percent human, with a very large collection of dwarves and especially elves among its number. Six percent of the population are chervah, and two percent hobbit. The rest is six percent dwarf and seven percent is elven. The elves live in the vast forests of Analand, with those in Chawberry Wood often training with the Battlemasters of the Academy, making them fearsome foes in combat.

People and PowersOccupations and SkillsTrade and Commerce

Analand has one of the most open and freest governments in all of Titan. They take careful heed of the people's wishes before making any decisions, and often take care to determine the needs and wants of the majority of the citizens, even though the government is a full monarchy.

Analand is noted for having some of the most liberal punishments in the Old World, and some of the lowest taxes. Some lords call this weakness on the part of Queen Ahleesia, but for some reason Analand has the lowest crime rate in the whole Old World. The death penalty is reserved for two crimes: Banned religious worship (where execution follows public humiliation) and Kidnapping. Treachery and Counterfeiting are punishable by permanent exile and banishment.

Imprisonment, whether in gaol, a workhouse or a labour-camp, is the most common form of punishment. Prison is prescribed for Murder (life), Rape (life), Sedition (life), Home invasion (ten years, minimum), Piracy (ten years), Robbery (five years, minimum) and Incitement to riot (five years, minimum). Hard labour is given for Arson (life) and Banditry (three years, minimum), whilst the workhouse is the destination for those convicted of Assault (six months, minimum), Rioting (two months) or Minor crimes (3 months, minimum) such as disturbance of the peace, sneaking into a city, unlawful entry into a city, vandalism, public intoxication, slander, etc.

Fines are also administered for the following minimum amounts: Drawing a weapon in a public place (150 Suns), Fraud (150 suns), Burglary (300 Suns), Slander against a priest (100 Suns), Smuggling (300 suns) and Tax evasion (300 suns, plus payment of all taxes due).

The nation's army is centered around the Great Wall of Analand, a wall that is, in theory, supposed to surround Analand and protect it from invaders. It is a sorry chapter in Analander history when this wall was built. Even though it is incomplete in three places, it has protected Analand before, most particularly from the monsters in Kakhabad and Mauristatia, and it is extremely impressive as well.

Analand is also renowned for an elite class of warriors who are trained in the Academy of Chawberry Wood. It is not known exactly where this academy is hidden, but when one goes in for training, he or she will come out as a perfect battle-master, with muscles finely honed and reflexes perfectly sharp. Many have tried to apply for the honor of training here, but very few ever manage to do so. The Battlemasters select the candidates themselves, and allow only these special people to find their Academy, which is hidden by special magic much like that of Elven villages. Some of these warriors are the personal guard of the Analand monarch, and it is said that no assassination attempt on the monarch has ever even been attempted. They are not interested in politics, but number only a hundred anyway.

One gold Libra's Sun equals ten moons.

Property taxes: Five percent of the entire worth of a home, seven percent for a business.

Income taxes: Eight percent for all residents, nine percent for all foreigners, twelve percent adventurers's tax in recovered loot in Analand. Foreigners can pay citizenship for one hundred gold suns.

Trading duties: All merchants who bring merchandise into Analand for trade must pay nine percent duties on the combined value of the goods.

Church tithes: All churches must pay eight percent of their total earnings, except the church of Libra, which pays only six percent in taxes, for being the patron goddess of Analand.

While the nation has recovered somewhat from the debacle of the Great Wall of Analand thanks to the influence of the Crown of Kings, it is still somewhat shaky. Although not as poor as Lendleland, it has difficulty competing with Femphrey or Gallantaria in some markets. In others, such as the rare perfumes and spices in Far Analand, its southern region, it has a virtual monopoly that has done much to bolster its economy.

Libra is the patron goddess of Analand, worshipped at the lake that carries her name. It is a point of pride among Analanders to make pilgrimages there to worship, although many religious groups have monasteries here.

Great Wall of Analand debacle is still celebrated as a national holiday where the people dress as fools and engage in slapstick shows and tomfoolery all day, as a joking reminder of their own foolishness.

Arkle Brandy is said to have been created by King Arkle IV of Analand, it has become a drink famed throughout Analand, and exported to other continents. While it seems to be a mild drink, especially for brandy, it has a powerful taste and provides a very regal sensation when drunk, or so says my co-author, Dron Benedous, which obviously suits a king.
The Old World also has many other Famous Drinks and Spirits.

Recent rumours:

In Analand, Queen Ahleesia has been doing well in rebuilding her nation's economy. While war may hurt the economy once more, the Analanders seem ready for it. The various disasters over the nation's history have forged a powerful bond of family in the national character, with the Analanders willing to help each other out for the greater good. Ahleesia is the most popular of sovereigns, and the Analander has begun encouraging the aid of his fellow wizards and travelled to other continents, subtly encouraging the movement of trade to Analand in case of war and other conflicts reducing the economic strength of the nation. I can only guess what is happening in Khul at the moment, but Arion and Hachiman appear to be willing to ship more trade Analand's way, with the conflicts in other ports. Analand is, perhaps, the safest and most stable of lands at the moment, although they continue to fight at the southern edge of the Great Wall against chaotics attempting to raid into their land. The chaotics have bogged down, and the Wall, once the thing that made Analand a pathetic joke to the rest of the continent, is doing much to protect the nation.
