53Mbit/s is now possible over short distances

xDSL/ISDN is now in service in Germany and being tested by BT

Video over xDSL remains under testing in the UK
Video on demand will soon be an option (Good quality video only needs about 4-5Mbit/s)

Deregulation of the local loop will reduce costs, increase bandwidth and reduce contention. 
Will also increase use of IP Multicast

BT's ADSL service will extend out into rural areas

IP and phone services will merge. In future your phone may have an IP address and run over IP.
Same-ISP calls could be free.

ADSL will eliminate the low-end leased lines (<2Mbit/s) and make faster leased lines cheaper.
